 Omani Khanjars, Part 2 Daggers of Pride and Patriotism The craftsmanship required to produce a khanjar is stunning, and can take weeks to several months to produce one. Traditionally the hilt (handle) was made from ivory or rhino horn, but today it may be made from wood, plastic, or camel bone. The scabbard (cover) is typically made from silver, but could be made from gold, copper, or brass. The designs are intricately engraved as well as hand-sewn with silver thread in delicate filagree. Prices run from 500-5000 OMR, and usually are passed down generation to generation. There are various models of khanjars, based on region and tribe. The most famous (and exclusive) is the Saidi type, belonging to the royal family. It is marked by a cross-like handle, 7 silver rings, and hanging straight. Other khanjars usually have a T-shaped handle, 4 silver rings, hang diagonally, and vary in size, width, and material. Regional variations include Al Nizwani or Dakhali, Al Batini or Saheli, Al Suri or Sharqiyah, Al Janubi or Dhofari, and Al Hanshiah (of the desert tribes). In the Old Testament, 'the sword' usually referred to warfare and violence. In the New Testament, this weapon takes on new meaning, as the powerful Word of God. Let us bless the local Omani believers to grow strong in using their spiritual swords! All wise and powerful Heavenly Father, we come in the Name of Jesus to thank You for the blessing of the Sword of the Spirit, Your Word. (Ephesians 6:17) What an incredible, powerful gift You have given Omani believers, to defend themselves from the attacks of the evil one. Just like Jesus used the Scriptures to refute the devil’s lies and twisted truth in the wilderness, teach them to quote and obey Bible verses as an important tool in resisting his attacks. (Matthew 4:4) It is a wonderful blessing, and we praise You for it, that Your Word brings truth into the lives of Omani believers. May they trust the Bible as a firm foundation on which to build their life. Every word in the Bible is inspired by You, and is trustworthy and profitable for instruction in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16) Thank you that Your Word is a protection against false teaching and a guide to how they should live. May they store up Your Word in their mind and heart and hide Your truth in the depths of their soul. May they have a grateful heart for the wisdom in Your Scriptures. Amen.  Holy Spirit Move in Ash-Sharqiyah South! Today, let us pray for the release of the Holy Spirit over Ash-Sharqiyah South. At Pentecost, God poured out the promised Holy Spirit, empowering the early church and drawing many to believe. Peter said in Acts 2:17-21, “What you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike—and they will prophesy.  Jalan Bani Bu Ali Traditionally Unique Jalan Bani Bu Ali (Arabic: جعلان بني بو علي, pop. 66,284) is a town and seat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali District (pop. 107,637) in Ash-Sharqiyah South Region. This area is known for its beaches with cool breezes and beautiful deserts. It is a conservative and traditional area, known to be friendly and curious towards visitors. Architecturally, the area is known for its ancient carved wooden doors, its unrestored fort, and a very unique mosque with 52 domes and a falaj canal running inside it. The Bani Bu Ali are a tribe in the area that in the past engaged in piracy up and down the coasts, and are known in the history books for their rebellion against the Sultan and the British in 1820-21. They were ultimately defeated by stronger British troops in what is known as the Bani Bu Ali expedition. “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  Jalan Bani Bu Hassan Horses and Tahrs Jalan Bani Bu Hassan (Arabic: جعلان بني بو حسن, pop. 34,466) is a town and seat of Jalan Bani Bu Hassan District (pop. 44,503) in Ash-Sharqiyah South Region. The town lies on a verdant plain, between the Hajar Mountains and the Wahiba Sands desert. This area is known for its handicrafts such as pottery, gold and silver jewelry, swords and khanjars. It is also known for its camel and Arabian horse breeding, and horse riding demonstrations for weddings and other celebrations. Nearby is Qahwan Mountain, with a nature reserve for the endangered Arabian tahr, a kind of mountain goat. “He gives me the surefootedness of a mountain goat upon the crags.  The Omani Flag Red, White and Green The current Omani flag has been flown since 1970 under Sultan Qaboos, and has both stripes as well as the national emblem–a khanjar overlaying two crossed swords. The colors of the flag are also symbolic. White is for peace and prosperity, and has also been associated with the Ibadhi Imam. Green is for fertility of the land, and Jebel Akhdar, the 'Green Mountain.' Red hearkens back to the previous flag of the pre-Qaboos Sultanate (which was solid red) and also signifies battles against invaders. Today, let’s bless Oman from the symbolism of the flag colors. Red: Oman, we bless you to believe in the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross, and to come under the atoning blood of the Lamb (Romans 5:8-9) White: Oman, we bless you to repent and be cleansed and purified, through Jesus’ sacrifice for you. 紅色、白色和綠色

 Masirah Island Rugged Natural Beauty Masirah Island (Arabic: جزيرة مصيرة, pop. 13,874) is an island and district in Ash-Sharqiyah South Region. It is the largest island in Oman, with an area of approximately 250 square miles (650 square kms). The island is accessible by ferry, and has become a popular tourist destination with beautiful nature and watersports such as surfing, kite surfing, and windsurfing. The island is a hatching ground for loggerhead sea turtles, and humpback whales migrate through its waters. The sea there is also rich in kingfish, lobster and prawn, and attracts herons and flamingos. In the 1930’s the British built a military installation here, which the Omani military took over in the 1970s. The US military has also periodically used the base as a staging ground, such as when attempting to free US hostages in Iran in 1980 and for the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. The rugged terrain and rough coastline has led to many shipwrecks on the island’s shores, and ship remains can still be seen along some beaches. In Arabic, ‘Masirah’ is related to the word meaning fate, destiny, predestination. For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will— to the praise of His glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One He loves. Researchers estimate that approximately 2.5% of any given population are open for religious change. So in Ash-Sharqiyah South region, that means approximately 7,886 people are potentially open! ‘Broad sowing’ initiatives are challenging in Oman, because of laws outlawing proselytization. However, social media campaigns are starting to connect with seekers and beginning to bear fruit.  Oman's Sea Turtles Amazing Creatures of the Deep Five of the world's seven species of sea turtle can be found in Oman’s waters: the green turtle, the loggerhead turtle, the hawksbill turtle, the olive ridley turtle, and the leatherback turtle. Several of Oman’s beaches are key nesting grounds, and many turtle migratory routes pass along Oman’s coasts. Three key turtle nesting grounds are found in Ash-Sharqiyah South: Ras Al-Jinz, Ras Al-Had, and Masirah Island. Only the female sea turtle comes ashore only to nest; the males live the entirety of their lives in the sea. During the breeding season, the female will come up on the beach at night and dig a deep hole, lay between 50 to 200 eggs (depending on species), refill the hole, and return to the sea–all within an hour. The eggs are left unattended and will hatch several weeks later, usually emerging at night. The hatchlings then immediately dash towards the sea to start their underwater migratory life. Incredibly, a female sea turtle is able to navigate her way back to the same beach she hatched on, in order to lay her eggs and continue the cycle of life.  The Lord's Prayer, Part 6 As We Also Forgive But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. We are currently praying through the Lord’s Prayer on behalf of Oman, based on this guide. Matthew 6:12: '…as we also forgive...' "But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." (Matthew 6:15) This is a sober warning given by Jesus. Let us pray to be able to obey this command. Gracious Father, help us to be people who forgive those who hurt or wrong us quickly and completely, without harboring grudges or bitterness. In so doing, may we know your peace and seek to live in peace with others, demonstrating the reality of the grace and love of Jesus in all that we say and do.
