Jesus in Islam VIII : Second Coming of Jesus - Cont.

Introduction

I honestly do not know what to say about this segment! Dr. Badawi spends a great deal of time discussing the Islamic account of how Jesus will return. This mythical account gives a great amount of credibility to Anwar Shaikh's thesis that Islam is nothing more than Arab nationalism.

Arshad Jinesh: I would like to know how long Jesus will live after his second coming and how the world be at the time when he comes.

Jamal Badawi: Well, After Jesus joins with the Muslim forces fighting the forces of evil or the false Messiah, and after he is overcoming those forces with Muslims, there will be no more wars because several sayings of the Prophet indicate that there will be no more Jeziya, a sort of tribute which is usually paid by the conquered in return for the protection of the conquering army which means at this time Islam will be the predominant faith. There are other saying of the Prophet as narrated in Akmad and Abu Dawud which say that there will be perfect peace on earth and there are even sayings which say that children can play with beasts, some of our Christian brothers have similar sayings also. As far as his period of living on earth during his second time, it says in Akhmad and Abu Dawud, it gives the more powerful figure of 40 years. In another narration it adds that he will also get married and have children, and again to show clearly that he was a human being because it shows, that for him to get married it would show what the position of his wife you can't really say that she is the daughter in law of God or if she had a child, the child is the grandchild of God. So apparently the purpose God knows behind the wisdom of calling Jesus to get married and to prove his full humanity and nothing but.

Once again, I must ask why the Qur'an omits such significant information, if it is the Word of God? Also, why did Jesus never mention any of this information to His followers, if it is true?

Perhaps one of the most amazing and prophetic sayings, a very prophetic Hadith, that was related in Bukhari, Muhammad said that there will be two armies that will be saved form the hell fire, one is the army that will conquer India the second is the army that will fight with Jesus, the son of Mary. I said that this is an amazingly prophetic saying. This prophecy was made during the lifetime of the prophet Muhammad and to the best of our knowledge, there was no specific plan to conquer India. In fact, it happened only as a result of the aggressive attitude of one of the rulers of Sindh were some missionaries, Muslim missionaries, were trying to invite people to Islam peacefully and the ruler of that region order their execution, he asked that they be killed. So the Caliph at that time headed by Muhammad al-Qasim, was a young commander and that took place 89 AH, that is nearly 80 years after the prophet so the army that will conquer India will be realized after 80 years is amazing. But my point basically is that prophecy was unlikely at the time that it was made came to pass after 80 years, there is no reason not to expect the second part to come true when Jesus comes again and fights with the Antichrist, it is an interesting prophetic Hadith.

I am not sure if this is amazing at all! The Ahadith were not compiled until long after 89 AH, so it is entirely conceivable that this "prophecy" could have been fabricated. Please remember that Bukhari died in 256 AH, long after al-Qasim invaded India! It is interesting to note that Bukhari wrote a book about the narrators (Zuafa-us-sagher). What is even more interesting is that Bukhari's book condemns several narrators including: Ata bin abi Maimoona, Ayyub bin Aiz, Ismail bin Aban, Zubair bin Muhammad, At-Tayyimi, Saeed bin Urwa, Abdullah bin Abi Labeed, Abdul Malik bin Ameen, Abdul waris bin Saeed, Ata bin As-Saib bin Yazeed, and Khamsan bin Minhal as unreliable. However, the Hadith-collection of Bukhari in the its modern form actually includes many traditions narrated by these very individuals! Obviously, these traditions, which Bukhari rejected, were inserted in his book following his death.

Arshad Jinesh: Now that will happen to the Prophet Jesus in his second earthly life?

Jamal Badawi: There is more than one saying that indicates that he will pass away like all other human beings, some saying of the prophet as narrated in Abu Dawud and Akmad describes that when he dies, Muslims will offer funeral prayers, that one of the sayings of the prophet and again one amazing prediction indicates even where he is going to be buried and no less a place but in the place where the prophet Muhammad is buried. That Hadith was narrated by Ibn ....? and in the translation, it says that Aishah, the wife of the prophet Muhammad once told him : "Oh messenger of Allah, I fear that I might live after you when you die oh prophet, will you permit me to be buried near you? But Muhammad replied to his wife : There is no room there [in the area where he will be buried] except for the grave of Abu Baksh, the grave of Omar, and the grave of Jesus, the son of Mary. Now, you might say it what sense is that saying of the prophet. It is very prophetic because the prophet speaks, how did he know that he was going to die before Abu Baksh and Omar? Number two, how did he know that Abu Bakr and Omar in that particular order would be buried next to him, how did he know that one would die before the other? Thirdly, how did he know that they would die in Medina? The companions used to travel a lot, it could have been anywhere, for example when the people used to go to pilgrimage to Mecca from Medina, it is quit possible that they could have died in another place and the Muslim custom is to bury as soon as possible and in the closest place so you don't have to transport. How did he know that they would die in Medina and be buried there? If all of these amazing things happened, the prophecies were fulfilled to the letter, there is no reason to believe that the place that is there, you find that where they are buried, there is one place waiting, one place remaining in the area, it is believed that this will be the place where the Prophet Jesus will be buried after his second coming and after he passes away.

Once again, this is not a very convincing prophecy. Please remember that Abu Dawud died in 261 AH, long after these events. How do we know that this Hadith was not invented later to make it appear that Muhammad made an accurate prophecy?

Arshad Jinesh: I would like to ask a question about the last supper, does the Qur'an say anything about the last supper, at least as it refers to the last supper?

Jamal Badawi: Well, as far as it is described in the Gospels, this is not in the Qur'an, it seems to be a mystical description of something that happened, or something that, after the fact, was done to explain the deification of Jesus. As our Christian brothers are aware, he dipped the bread and said this is my body and gave them the wine and said drink it, it is my blood and so on, there is a big argument even within Christianity itself whether it is transubstitution, or something like that, the actual bread and wine turns to, is it actual or highly symbolical concepts really, but I am not quit certain of the historicity, but there is no analogy to that in the Qur'an.. There is something in the Qur'an which may be connected more to the feeding of multitudes, one of the miracles of Jesus by his creator and that appears in Sura 5:111-115, just for shortness of time, and when I [Allah] inspired the disciples saying believe in me and my messenger [Jesus]. They said, we believe and witness that we submit to you. Then the disciples said Oh Jesus, is your Lord able to send down to us a table spread or food from heaven? He said observe your duty to Allah if you are true believers. They said yours to eat from it that we may ... our hearts and know that you have spoken truth to us that we may be witness to this. Jesus, son of Mary, said Oh Allah, send down for us a table spread that it may be a feast for us for the first of us and for the last of us from you. Give us sustenance for you are the best of sustainers. Allah said I have sent it sown and who so ever disbelieves, will him surely afterwards, I will punish with a punishment that I have not punished any of my creatures. So that comes the closest to the notion of the last supper, some feast or meal. But, it is in a totally different context with a totally different significance that the traditionally viewed last supper.

No, the last supper is a sacramental commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The last supper, and the death of Jesus, fits perfectly into the Old Testament theme of redemption and forgiveness of sins through a blood sacrifice. This theme is absent in the Qur'an. If we assume that the Qur'an is the Word of God [something that I do not assume], then why did God completely forget about the important theme of blood sacrifice which He emphasized for many centuries in the Old Testament? Does God change or is He eternal?

Arshad Jinesh: In the last several programs, we have described in detail, the profile of the Prophet Jesus according to the Qur'an , now what has been the reaction of the Christians who have come to know that?

Jamal Badawi: I will judge it from my humble experience of over 43 years in North America a lot of our Christian brothers are not really aware of what the Qur'an says, many times, they get their information on Islam through second hand sources, this mythical and very incorrect information is fed to them, even by their least informed clergy, who have very little knowledge of Islam or its sources. Indeed, I have even found that some people might think, mistakenly, that the Qur'an is an Antichrist and that Muslims have no respect for Jesus which is erroneous. There are some Christian brethren who I have noted to feel mistakenly, that when Muslims say that Jesus is a messenger from Allah, that this is a sort of demotion from divinity. And that might reflect what they think a messenger or prophet means because they look into the Bible and see the kinds of things attributed to the, they think that it is a demotion. Whereas, as we explained in previous programs, in Islam is a messenger, a person, a very highly respected person. Some people, however, seem to understand it more positively, what the Qur'an says about Jesus, and they express their appreciation of that but still they respect and remain with their original particular belief in which they have been indoctrinated. An example of this is the Christian theologian Reesimon??? whose article released recently in the Muslim world, the title of it was A Portrait of Jesus. And he comments on that article by saying this is a coherent and impressive picture of a messenger [Jesus] of the one and only God who proclaimed the message in his own time and place. In another place in his article he said the holy portrait of Jesus stands out as coherent. So there is some degree of objectivity, there is some degree and understanding about the positive nature about Jesus. There are many perhaps counted by the thousands including places like North America and Europe who come from Christian backgrounds, and they have studied about Jesus in the Qur'an and have read it, they were very touched and believed in Jesus as in the Qur'an as a messenger and many of them actually ended up embracing Islam. And it is happening in reasonable numbers I would say. And this is not only limited to the present, in fact, historically a lot of people also who came from Christian backgrounds embraced Islam and what the Qur'an actually says about Jesus. One of the famous stories of how Elagos, the Abyssinian king actually embraced Islam, it was actually by hearing about Jesus in the Qur'an and that took place even in the lifetime of the prophet Muhammad.

There is a wide variety of opinion in North America, and in the Western world, because freedom of thought and speech are cherished values - and I am most thankful for that. However, it is highly inaccurate to call the opinion of any given person a "Christian opinion" simply because they live in the West. The Christian opinion is that no one can come to God except through accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior - we can do nothing to save ourselves or to earn our salvation. Accepting Jesus as our Savior is the only way to salvation. Any person who preaches a message that is contrary to this is a false prophet.

Arshad Jinesh: Well for the benefit of our viewers who may not be familiar with that story, could you narrate it for us?

Jamal Badawi: I will narrate that in a very brief way, Basically, as you know, Muslims were persecuted in the first 15 years. At one point, when they could not practice their faith, the prophet recommended that some of them to migrate to Abyssinia which is now Ethiopia. And he did, the reason is that he said that the king there, who was a Christian, was a just and beneficial king and will not persecute them because of their faith. A group of Muslims went there and stayed for some time but there were enemies who tried to arose the hatred of the king against them and deny them refuge and send them back to face the persecution from their own type. One of the things that they tried to arose the hatred of the king was told that those people, the Muslims, belittled Jesus. He did not want to take their word for granted so he asked the group of Muslims and he asked their leader Jafir, what does the Qur'an say about Jesus? They recited to him from Sura 19 and when the king heard that historians say that he cried, that tears were following over his cheeks to the point where his beard became soaked expressing how he was deeply touched by what he heard. He heard very important words, he said Allah, that is the name of God, that this Qur'an and what Jesus taught are all coming form the same source that these are all divine revelations. The are second indications that the king, because when he died, Muhammad made funeral prayers on his soul and usually, specifically in the Muslim prayers, that is only offered for someone who died a Muslim. And that shows the influence of the Qur'an of Allah as the last divine revelation on a person, even though he came from a different background he was very receptive and listened to the Qur'an without prejudice or any preconceived ideas open heart and mind and the examples are numerous.

However, the evidence is purely circumstantial.

Arshad Jinesh: I am quit eager, as our viewers are, to hear that section that touched him so much. Maybe you can read that for us?

Jamal Badawi: Sura 19:16- :

This focused more on the earlier part than on his birth, deals with the message and the letter of the message and the miracles.

I order to save time and space, please read all of Sura 19.
